Installing Word

Error message 2355 or Corrupt Cabinet

If during installation of Word you receive error message number 2355 or the message text "Corrupt Cabinet," update the version of Microsoft Windows Installer on your computer by running the appropriate executable file found on the installation CD. The following assumes that D:\ is your CD drive.

For Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) D:\FILES\SUPPORT\INSTMSI.EXE
For Windows NT 4.0 D:\FILES\SUPPORT\INSTMSIW.EXE
For Windows 2000 D:\FILES\SUPPORT\Q282879.EXE

After running the file, restart your computer and begin installation again.

Working with Word

Genius Assistant character no longer installed

Word no longer supports the Genius Assistant character. For customers who were using this Office Assistant and who are upgrading from Word 2000, the Assistant will be switched to the default character, Clippit. Upon upgrading, you can select another Assistant by right-clicking the Assistant and then clicking Choose Assistant.

Clip art Web Collections scope requires Internet Explorer 5 or later

When you are searching for clip art, either in Clip Organizer or in the Insert Clip Art task pane, you must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later to use the Web Collections scope in the Search in list.

Tools on the Web and Internet Explorer

To use the Tools on the Web feature from within Clip Organizer, or from the action menu of any clip, including those in the Insert Clip Art task pane, you must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later. This requirement does not apply to the Tools on the Web feature when accessed from the Tools menu.

Using Compare and Merge with Word 2.0 documents requires saving files in Word Document format

Under very specific circumstances, Word may stop responding (hang) if you use the Compare and Merge feature to compare documents created in Word 2.0 for Windows. This behavior will occur if the comparison reveals revised or deleted text immediately after a table. To work around this problem, use the Save as command on the File menu to save the Word 2.0 documents in Word Document format before you perform the comparison.

Handwriting recognition may not display on the screen when using certain display settings

If you are using handwriting recognition to enter text, handwriting may not display on the screen if your computer's display colors are set to 256 colors or if the display font size is set for Large fonts.

Printed watermarks

Printed watermarks may print as a solid black rectangle on some laser printers such as the HP LaserJet 4, if the Text watermark option is clicked in the Printed Watermark dialog box, and the Semitransparent check box is also selected. To fix this problem, clear the Semitransparent check box.

Compress Picture feature

The Compress Picture feature does not work with pictures inserted with the Text Wrapping attribute set to In Line With. You do not receive a warning that the picture is not compressed. Note that you may be able to work around this behavior by setting Text Wrapping to a different option, compressing the selected picture, and then setting Text Wrapping back to In Line With Text.

Version history is lost when opening Word 2002 documents in an earlier version of Word

Version history (on the File menu, click Versions) is lost when you open a Word 2002 document in an earlier version of Word. If you want to view a particular version of a Word 2002 document in Word 2000 (which is the only previous version of Word that supports versioning), you must first open that version of the document in Word 2002, save a copy of it, and then open the copy in Word 2000.

The Versions feature is not compatible with the Make local copy of files stored on network or removable drives option

The Versions feature (on the File menu, click Versions) is not compatible with the Make local copy of files stored on network or removable drives option (on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Save tab). If this option is selected, you will be unable to open the file from the network or removable drive. To work around this behavior, clear the Make local copy of files stored on network or removable drives option.

Using Mail Merge with Microsoft Access or Microsoft Excel data sources

When using Mail Merge, you cannot connect to a Microsoft Access or Microsoft Excel data source whose location is specified using a URL (location that starts with an http://). To fix the problem, either copy the file to your local disk, or access the file through a Windows file share.

Using the multiple-user editing feature on a shared location

The multiple-user editing feature is designed to support multiple-reviewer collaboration on documents posted to a shared location. When you try to open a document that is already opened for editing by another person, you are given the option to open a local copy of the document that can later be merged into the original document. You will be notified when the original document becomes available for editing, and then prompted to merge the documents. Normally, you would see a marked up document that can be edited or saved; however, if your document is on a Web server, the merge operation results in a document that doesn't have the changes from the user who initially was editing the document. In addition, the document is marked Read Only. The workaround is to save the document to a different location after the merge is completed, and then click Compare and Merge Documents on the Tools menu to merge it back with the master copy of the document. If you don't do this, you will lose the initial user's changes.

Overlapping characters after double quote using some HP printers

On Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, the character before and the character after a double quote will overlap. To work around this issue, if you have the HP DJ630 or DJ640 printer, you can use the DJ610 printer driver. If you have the HP DJ840 printer, you can use the DJ810 printer driver. If you have the HP DJ900 series, you can use the DJ985 printer driver.

Problems with Internet Explorer 5.5 when using speech recognition, handwriting recognition, or Input Method Editors (IME) on a non-East Asian version of Microsoft Windows 2000

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, you may have problems when you use the following features: speech recognition, handwriting recognition, or Input Method Editors (IME) on a non-East Asian version of Microsoft Windows 2000. For example, if you turn off Word as your e-mail editor and switch to HTML message format, you may not be able to use these alternative input methods. The workaround is to use Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 6 or use Word as your e-mail editor.

Problem with the Web Page Wizard if the Microsoft Windows language version does not match the language used by Office XP

The Web Page Wizard will not run if your language version of Microsoft Windows and Office XP do not match. For example, if you are using the German language version of Office XP on a non-German language version of Windows, the Web Page Wizard will not run. However, if you change the installed language for Office XP to German, the Web Page Wizard will run. For example, to change the installed language from English to German, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office XP Language Settings. In the Default version of Microsoft Office box, change the language from English (U.S.) to German.

Word and Indic languages

If you are enabling support for the Indic languages, it is recommended that you choose Indic in the Default version of Microsoft Office list in the Microsoft Office Language Settings (on the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office Language Settings).

Microsoft Word requires Microsoft Windows 2000 or later for Indic language support. Devanagari and Tamil script are fully supported with Windows 2000.
